Richard A. Gomez was born in Guadalupe, Co. He grew up on his family’s farm and ranch just outside of Antonito, which was liquidated when he was just 10 years old. He began working for the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) in the early 1970s, which is when he began to notice discrimination against Hispanic borrowers. He spent the rest of his life working to combat discrimination by calling attention to the injustices he saw. Following his retirement he continued to help farmers fight for compensation in the San Luis Valley. His efforts played an instrumental role in the USDA’s eventual settlement through Garcia v. Vilsack, which benefited more than 30 Hispanic farmers and ranchers in the SLV.
